WHAT IS ROTARY?
How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of over a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, and the emphasis of high ethical standards.
The Rotary club is a grass-roots organization consisting of business professionals and community leaders that volunteer their time, talent & resources towards meeting and solving vital community needs. Individual Rotary clubs belong to Rotary International. Since its establishment in 1905, there are now over 1.2 million members of Rotary International worldwide.
Individual members, or Rotarians, belong to a local club where most of its meaningful service work is carried out. The Club's motto of "Service Above Self" has created a culture of its members not only being engaged in their communities, but also internationally.
A main focus of service for Rotary International has been its lifelong fight against Polio, a cause it has contributed greatly to eradicating in the time of its existence. With the recent re-appearance of the disease, the Hampton Rotary Club has conducted fundraising for this disease as well as for the YMCA, the Rotary Foundation and the Salvation Army. The Club also awards scholarships to entering college freshmen.
Examples of Hampton Rotary Club events are our annual harbor-side Club picnic in June, our annual waterfront Oyster Roast in October and annual Holiday party in December.
